Your First Microneedling Appointment: What Actually Happens

Most first-time microneedling clients arrive having read about the treatment and nothing at all about the appointment. That gap is where the nerves live - not in the science, but in not knowing whether to wear makeup, how long the numbing takes, what the room is like, or whether you can drive home afterward.

So this is the hour itself, in order, at our Plano studio. You can drive home afterward.

The one-line version

A microneedling appointment is booked for 60 minutes. It opens with a skin analysis, then cleansing, then numbing cream with time to work, then the SkinStylus pass, then the serum or exosome system your tier includes - with LED light therapy and a soothing mask on the upgrade tiers. You leave with post-care applied and written aftercare instructions. Expect redness like a light sunburn for roughly 24 to 72 hours.

The Short Answer

The whole appointment is one visit, with no separate consultation to book or pay for first. The skin analysis is part of the treatment here, which is also how we decide depth, so the first thing that happens is somebody looking carefully at your skin rather than reaching for a device.

Numbing cream is applied before the needling, and it needs time to work before we start - that waiting time is built into the appointment rather than added to it. Afterward you are red, not bandaged. Nothing about this requires a driver or a day off, though we would not book it on the morning of a wedding.

Before You Come

There is very little required of you, and we would rather you did nothing than did something aggressive.

  • Makeup is fine. We cleanse before anything else happens. Come as you are.
  • Do not arrive with a fresh tan or sunburn. The AAD lists sun protection on both ends of microneedling - before treatment, "you'll also need to protect your skin from the sun." Recently burned or tanned skin changes what is safe to do and may mean rescheduling.
  • Leave the strong actives alone in the days beforehand. This is not the week to start a new retinol or try an at-home peel. Tell us what you are using and we will tell you what to pause.
  • Bring the list. Prescription medications including isotretinoin and retinoids, recent waxing, lasers, injectables or peels anywhere else, a history of cold sores, pregnancy or nursing, allergies including fragrance, and anything active on the skin. Every one of those changes the plan, and the analysis is only as good as what you tell us.
  • Mention anything in your diary. An event, a vacation, a swim meet in the next fortnight - say so, and we will time the session and the depth around it.

There is also a short list where the answer may be that microneedling is not right for you at all: the AAD advises against it if you heal slowly or poorly, have or have had a keloid scar, or have a weakened immune system due to a medical condition or medication. We ask about all three before we treat, and we would rather hear it in the room than find out afterward.

The Appointment, Step by Step

  1. Skin analysis. We look at your skin in good light, touch it, and ask about history, products and medications. For texture and scarring this includes looking at your skin in raking light, because a flat mark vanishes at an angle while a true depression casts a shadow. This is where depth, tier and how many sessions you are likely to need get decided - and where we would tell you if a different treatment is the better call.
  2. Cleansing. Makeup and the day come off properly before anything else happens.
  3. Numbing cream. Applied across the treatment area and left to work. You wait; nothing starts until it has taken effect.
  4. The SkinStylus pass. The device creates precise micro-channels across the treatment area, working section by section. This is the part that is actually the treatment - everything after it is support for what it started.
  5. Serum or exosome infusion. The system your tier includes is driven into the open channels: an AnteAGE hyaluronic acid booster, growth factors, exosomes, or the full P.E.A.R.L protocol.
  6. LED and a soothing mask, on the upgrade tiers. The growth-factor and exosome tiers finish with LED light therapy and a calming mask. What LED does and does not do is covered in our LED guide.
  7. Post-care and instructions. Post-treatment product goes on before you leave, and you go home with written aftercare written for the depth we treated you at.

How It Feels

Numbing cream is applied for comfort, and that is genuinely what it is for - this is not a treatment people grit their teeth through. What we will not do is tell you exactly how it will feel, because sensation varies between people and across the face; bonier areas are generally more noticeable than fleshier ones. Say something at any point and we will adjust.

Immediately afterward, the FDA's consumer guidance on microneedling devices describes the expected effects as "bleeding, bruising, redness, tightness, itching and peeling," which "typically go away without any treatment after a few days or weeks." The AAD similarly describes treated skin that "may feel like it's sunburned, causing minor discomfort, burning, or swelling," with those reactions "usually" disappearing "in a few days to a week." That is the normal course. None of it needs treating.

On deeper skin tones, the AAD notes you may see darker shades on the treated skin rather than redness. Also normal.

What Changes Between Tiers

If you have not chosen a tier yet, the appointment is the same shape whichever you pick - the needling is identical across all four microneedling lines on our menu, and only the finish changes.

TierPriceHow the appointment differs
SkinStylus Microneedling (Original)$300Finishes with an AnteAGE hyaluronic acid booster. No LED or mask step
Microneedling + Brightening GF Serum$400AnteAGE growth factors and skin-repair proteins, then LED light therapy and a soothing mask
Microneedling + Brightening Exosomes$500AnteAGE exosomes instead, then LED light therapy and a soothing mask
Microneedling + PEARL Exosomes$600The AnteAGE P.E.A.R.L protocol - exosomes, PDRN, PDGF, antioxidants and amino acids
SkinStylus Nanoneedling$150A different treatment: no numbing, no needling injury, essentially no downtime

The full comparison, including which tier suits which concern, is in which microneedling is right for you. You do not have to decide before you arrive - that is part of what the analysis is for.

The Days After, Day by Day

A short version of the healing timeline, so you can plan your week. The full set of instructions - what to pause, for how long, and what warrants a phone call - is in microneedling aftercare, and the written version we hand you always takes priority over anything on this page.

WhenWhat to expectWhat to do
The rest of the dayFlushed, warm and tightNothing on your face but the post-care we send home with you. No makeup, no gym, no sun
Day 1Redness like a light sunburn, sometimes mild puffinessStill no makeup until the 24-hour mark. Cleanse gently with fingertips and lukewarm water, then moisturize
Days 2-3Redness fading. Skin may feel dry or faintly roughMakeup is fine from 24 hours. Keep the routine boring. Sunscreen from the point it is comfortable
Days 4-7Possible light flaking - some people barely flake at allLet it shed. No scrubs, no picking, no retinol or acids for about a week
Week 2 onwardSmoother, brighter skin. The slow collagen work is invisible and underwayResume your usual actives once flaking has finished. Daily sunscreen. Book the next session in the 2-to-4-week window

What You Leave With

  • Post-treatment product already applied, chosen to suit the serum we infused.
  • Written aftercare instructions, written for the depth we treated you at - not a generic handout.
  • A plan. How many sessions we think your skin needs and roughly when the next one should be. The reasoning behind those numbers is in how many microneedling sessions you need.
  • A phone number. If something looks wrong - spreading redness, heat, pain getting worse after day two or three - call us the same day rather than waiting it out.

Booking the Next One

Microneedling is a course rather than a one-off. The AAD notes that for acne scars "you may need 3 to 5 treatments, which are performed every 2 to 4 weeks," and that gap is the collagen remodeling window - time your skin needs to finish the round it has just started.

On results, the honest timeline: "you may see improvement within a few weeks," and "it usually takes several months before you see full results." The brighter, plumper look in week two is real, but a good part of it is hydration. The structural work is slower and quieter than that.
