Microneedling vs Nanoneedling: Which One Does Your Skin Need?

SkinStylus microneedling treatment in progress at Skin Study Med Spa in Plano, TX

Two lines on our microneedling menu look closely related and are not. SkinStylus Nanoneedling is $150. SkinStylus Microneedling (Original) is $300. Both are 60 minutes appointments, both use a SkinStylus handpiece, and the gap between them is the single most misunderstood thing on our price list.

The temptation is to read nanoneedling as microneedling for people on a budget. It is not. It is a different treatment doing a different job, and if you book it for a job it cannot do you will be disappointed by a perfectly good treatment. So here is the difference in plain terms, who each one is actually for, and how a lot of our clients end up using both.

The one-line version

Nanoneedling ($150) works in the outer layer of the skin to drive serum absorption and glow - no numbing cream, essentially no downtime, makeup the same day. Microneedling (from $300) goes deeper to trigger collagen remodeling, which is what changes texture, scarring and fine lines - numbing cream, and redness like a light sunburn for roughly 24 to 72 hours.

The Short Answer

If you want your skin to look better this week - brighter, plumper, better hydrated, makeup sitting well - book nanoneedling. If you want your skin to be different in three months - a scar softened, a texture smoothed, a line shallower - book microneedling and plan it as a series.

Neither answer is a compromise. They are simply bought for different reasons, and the honest version of that is: nanoneedling will not resurface an acne scar, and microneedling is the wrong thing to book four days before a wedding.

The Whole Difference Is Depth

Microneedling creates controlled micro-channels deep enough to trigger your body's wound-healing response. The American Academy of Dermatology describes it as "a medical treatment that uses tiny needles to puncture the skin", used to diminish acne scars, large pores, uneven texture and fine lines. The improvement comes from your own skin rebuilding collagen and elastin in the treated area, which is why it is often called collagen induction therapy, and why it takes months rather than days to finish showing up.

Nanoneedling deliberately stops short of that. It creates microscopic channels in the outermost layer of the skin to maximize serum absorption, without injuring the tissue underneath. No wound, no wound-healing response, no remodeling - and no numbing cream or recovery either.

The FDA draws the category line in a way that makes the distinction concrete. A microneedling product that "does not have longer needles or sharp needles that penetrate the skin and only claims to facilitate exfoliation of the skin or improve the appearance of skin" is not regulated as a medical device at all. That is the difference between our two services in one sentence: one is a medical treatment, the other is an advanced exfoliation and infusion treatment.

Who Nanoneedling Is For

At $150 it is the most accessible treatment on the microneedling menu, and these are the people we book it for:

  • Anyone who cannot spare the redness. An event, a photoshoot, a work week with meetings - nanoneedling gets you glow without a recovery window to plan around. Our wedding prep timeline covers how to sequence it properly.
  • Dull, dry or dehydrated skin. Better absorption of the serum we infuse is the entire point of the treatment.
  • People between microneedling sessions. Something useful to do in the gap without disturbing the remodeling underway.
  • First-timers who are nervous about needling. It is a genuinely gentle introduction, and it tells us how your skin behaves before we go deeper.
  • Skin that is currently too reactive for microneedling. Sometimes the right answer is to calm things down first. That is a call we make at your skin analysis.

Who Microneedling Is For

Microneedling starts at $300 with the SkinStylus Microneedling (Original), and it is what we recommend when something structural needs to change:

  • Acne scarring. Depressed scarring responds to collagen stimulation, which is a thing only the deeper treatment does - see microneedling for acne scars.
  • Rough or uneven texture you can feel with your fingertips. Surface treatments make this look better for a week; needling changes it.
  • Fine lines and early aging. Collagen loss is the underlying issue and collagen induction is the direct answer to it.
  • Enlarged pores and uneven tone. Both are on the AAD's list of concerns microneedling is used to treat.

If you want recovery and brightness supported as well, the upgrade tiers infuse growth factors or exosomes instead of hyaluronic acid - $400 to $600, all laid out in our microneedling options compared.

How the Two Alternate

The most common pattern we see is not a choice between the two at all. It is microneedling as a course to move the thing that needs moving, then nanoneedling in between and afterward to keep the skin fed and glowing while the slow collagen work continues.

That rhythm works because the two treatments do not compete for the same window. Microneedling sessions sit 2 to 4 weeks apart - the AAD notes that for acne scars "you may need 3 to 5 treatments, which are performed every 2 to 4 weeks" - and that gap is remodeling time rather than a scheduling convenience. Nanoneedling asks nothing of the healing process, so it can slot into that calendar without disturbing it.

We will not publish a fixed alternating schedule here, because the right spacing depends on your skin, your series and what you are preparing for. That is a plan we build at your skin analysis and revisit at each visit - the pacing question in general is covered in how many microneedling sessions you need.

The Aftercare Is Not the Same Either

Worth knowing before you book, because it decides what your next 24 hours look like. After microneedling: no makeup, no sweating and no sun for the first day, retinol and exfoliating acids put away for about a week, and daily sunscreen from the point it is comfortable. The full version is in microneedling aftercare, and we send written instructions home with every microneedling client.

After nanoneedling: makeup the same day is fine, the gym is fine, your routine is broadly fine. We would still skip strong actives for a day or two and wear sunscreen, because exfoliation is exfoliation - but there is no recovery window to work around.

One screening note that applies to both: tell us about prescription medications including isotretinoin and retinoids, recent waxing, lasers or peels elsewhere, a history of cold sores, pregnancy or nursing, and anything active on the skin we would be treating. The AAD also advises against microneedling if you heal slowly or poorly, have had a keloid scar, or have a weakened immune system due to a medical condition or medication. We ask about all of it before we treat.

Booking in Plano

Both treatments are on our microneedling and exosomes page - SkinStylus Nanoneedling at $150 and the SkinStylus Microneedling (Original) at $300, with growth-factor and exosome upgrades above it. Everything is on the published price list, and there is no consultation fee: the skin analysis is part of the appointment.

If you are not sure which of the two you need, book the analysis and let us look. Treatments are performed by founder and licensed esthetician Leila Razipoor, with clinical protocols overseen by our Medical Director, Dr. Brady Steineck, MD, and our clients have rated the studio 5.0 stars across 62 Google reviews. Get in touch and we will tell you honestly which one fits - including when the honest answer is the cheaper one.
