Chemical Peel for Acne: Which Peel, and What a Series Looks Like

The American Academy of Dermatology confirms the premise in a single line: "Dermatologists use chemical peels to treat some types of acne and conditions that discolor the skin." Note the hedge in the middle of that sentence. Some types. Which type you have decides whether a peel is the right instrument, which of our three it should be, and whether anything should happen before it.

The one-line version

Congestion, blackheads and oily skin - Alpha-Beta Peel Facial, $225, as a short series. Breakouts that keep leaving dark marks behind - Mandeliclear Chemical Peel, $225, the corrective peel that works on both at once. Angry, inflamed, actively painful acne - calm it first with the Acne Treatment Facial (75 minutes, $200) and revisit the peel once the skin has settled.

The Short Answer

Acne is not one picture. The skin that produces a steady supply of blackheads and closed comedones is doing something different from the skin with a handful of deep, inflamed lesions, and both are different again from skin that has cleared but is covered in the brown marks the breakouts left behind.

All three of our Circadia peels cost $225, so price cannot and should not break the tie. The full comparison guide covers all three in detail; this page is the acne-specific version of that decision.

Which of the Three Peels

PeelTimePriceThe acne picture it suitsWhat to expect afterward
Alpha-Beta Peel Facial60 min$225Oily, congested skin. Blackheads and closed comedones that refill within weeks of every extraction. Breakouts without much inflammation. Texture caused by congestion rather than scarringLittle to no downtime. Occasionally a blemish surfaces in the days afterward on congestion-prone skin
Mandeliclear Chemical Peel30 min$225Acne and pigment together - breakouts that keep leaving flat brown or tan marks behind. Our corrective choice when clarity is the goal rather than comfortSome dryness or light peeling for a few days, which is how this peel works rather than a problem
Lactic Acid Peel Facial60 min$225Rarely the acne pick on its own. It earns a place when acne-prone skin is also dry, tight or easily irritated - often from the treatment the acne is already gettingLittle to no downtime. Hydrates while it resurfaces

The reason the Alpha-Beta is the congestion peel is mechanical rather than mystical. Alpha hydroxy acids work on the surface; beta hydroxy acids are oil-soluble, which means they can get inside a pore. Extractions clear what is in a pore today - a peel that reaches inside it works on the reason it fills back up.

The Mandeliclear earns its place for a different reason. It is mandelic acid with a Vitamin A accelerator to boost cell turnover, and mandelic acid turns up in acne and pigment protocols because of how it behaves: the Sarkar, Bansal and Garg review in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery describes it as "one of the largest alpha hydroxy acids which penetrates the epidermis slowly and uniformly, making it an ideal peeling agent for sensitive skins." On skin that marks easily, a slow and even pass is worth more than an aggressive one.

When a Facial Comes First

If your acne is actively inflamed - sore, raised, angry - we will usually book the Acne Treatment Facial (75 minutes, $200) before any peel. Circadia enzyme exfoliation, a purifying mask and Oxygen Rx to calm the inflammation, reduce redness and clear congestion. Exfoliating inflamed skin usually makes it angrier, and there is nothing clever about doing it anyway.

That is not a delay tactic or an upsell. It is a sequence: calm the skin, then correct it, then maintain it. Plenty of clients run the facial first and come back for the peel series six weeks later with far better results than they would have had going straight in.

There is also a limit worth stating. The AAD's guidance on acne that will not clear is to "give an acne treatment at least 4 weeks to work," with full clearing taking two to three months or longer. If you have been consistent well past that window with no change, prescription options are a dermatologist's to offer, not ours - and cystic or scarring acne belongs in a doctor's office from the start.

What a Series Actually Looks Like

A peel for acne is bought as a course, not as an appointment. The AAD's guidance for this category is that "3 to 5 peels may be necessary to give you the desired results" and that "these peels may be repeated every 2 to 5 weeks." That puts a course at roughly two to five months of calendar time.

PeelPer session3 sessions5 sessions
Alpha-Beta Peel Facial$225$675$1,125
Mandeliclear Chemical Peel$225$675$1,125

Two things we will not do. We will not sell you a package before we have seen how your skin handles the first one, and we will not compress the interval because something is coming up in the diary. The spacing is set at your skin analysis based on what the last session did, and it is the part of the plan most worth respecting.

Afterward, maintenance matters more than people expect. The AAD notes that "most results are not permanent because our skin continues to age," and acne-prone skin in particular keeps producing the thing you just corrected. Most clients step back to a facial every 4 to 6 weeks and return to peels when there is something new to clear.

Pairing Peels With Facials and HydraFacial

Acne-prone skin generally does better on a combination than on a single repeated treatment, and the three things on our menu that work together for it are the peel series, the corrective facial, and the HydraFacial.

  • Peel series for the correction. Alpha-Beta Peel Facial or Mandeliclear Chemical Peel, $225, on the 2-to-5-week rhythm above. This is the part that changes something.
  • Acne Treatment Facial for the inflamed phase. 75 minutes, $200. Calming and purifying, with extractions where they are warranted. Our full breakdown of the facial route is in best facial for acne, rosacea and hyperpigmentation.
  • HydraFacial for maintenance between peels. From $190 for the Signature HydraFacial (30 minutes); the Deluxe HydraFacial at $270 adds a customized booster and LED light therapy. Gentle suction extraction and hydration with no downtime, which makes it an easy treatment to slot into a congestion plan. HydraFacial benefits by skin type covers what it does for acne-prone skin and what it does not.

What we will not do is run two exfoliating treatments close together. The AAD warns that over-exfoliation leads to "skin that is red and irritated," and on acne-prone skin a compromised barrier makes everything worse, not better. If you have had a peel in the last fortnight - here or anywhere - tell us, and we will build a gentler appointment around it.

Your bathroom shelf counts toward the same total. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic cleansers, acid toners, retinol and prescription retinoids all change how your skin will respond to a peel. We ask at the analysis, and the honest answer is worth more than the tidy one.

The Marks Left Behind

For many people the breakouts have largely stopped and the real complaint is what they left. That is worth separating properly, because the three things people call acne scarring respond very differently.

What you are looking atWhat it probably isWhat we would do
Flat brown or tan marks exactly where a pimple used to bePost-inflammatory hyperpigmentationMandeliclear Chemical Peel as a series, plus daily sunscreen. Preventing the next mark matters more than fading this one - see best chemical peel for hyperpigmentation
Flat pink or purple marks that blanch when you press themPost-inflammatory erythema - lingering vessels rather than pigmentA peel does essentially nothing for these. Time, barrier care and sun protection are the honest answer
A dent, pit or shadow you can feel with a fingertipA depressed scar - lost collagen under the surfaceNot a peel. Microneedling is the collagen-building route - microneedling vs chemical peel for acne scars is the full comparison

The simplest test is light rather than a mirror. Rake light across your cheek from the side instead of looking at it straight on - color disappears, texture does not. Our acne scars guide walks through it in detail.

What a Peel Will Not Do for Acne

  • It will not cure acne. A peel clears and corrects; it does not change the underlying tendency. Maintenance and a home routine do the long-term work.
  • It will not fill a depressed scar. Resurfacing color does not raise a floor. That is collagen work.
  • It will not replace medical treatment for cystic or scarring acne. That is a dermatologist's job, and getting there sooner protects your skin better than any series we could sell you.
  • It will not work in a week. Judge a peel course in months, not after the first appointment.
  • It is not an at-home purchase. The AAD carries an FDA warning that "some chemical peels sold for at-home use are causing serious injuries," and advises buying and using one "only under the supervision of a licensed, trained provider." On acne-prone skin, a chemical burn does not heal into clear skin - it heals into marks.

What We Screen at Your Skin Analysis

Every appointment opens with a professional skin analysis, included rather than billed as a consultation. For acne it is the part that matters most, because what we are deciding is not only which peel but whether a peel is the right move this month at all.

Tell us about prescription medications including isotretinoin and retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and acid products at home, recent waxing, lasers or peels elsewhere, a history of cold sores, pregnancy or nursing, and any active infection or open, broken skin in the area. Every one of those changes what is safe or sensible on the day - and recent isotretinoin in particular is a conversation with your prescriber first, not an esthetician's call.

And if the answer is that you need a doctor rather than a treatment room, you will get that answer. Esthetician vs dermatologist maps exactly where that line sits in Texas.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends which acne problem you have. For oily, congested skin and blackheads that refill within weeks, the Alpha-Beta Peel Facial (60 minutes, $225) is our pick, because the beta hydroxy component is oil-soluble and works inside the pore. For breakouts that keep leaving dark marks behind, the Mandeliclear Chemical Peel (30 minutes, $225) is the corrective choice, treating the acne and the pigment together. For actively inflamed acne we usually calm the skin with the Acne Treatment Facial first. The AAD confirms dermatologists use chemical peels to treat some types of acne - which type you have is a skin-analysis question.
